Time Magazine this week is supporting National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a Special Report on "The Changing Face of Breast Cancer". This web page links to other articles on breast cancer, all of which are worth reading for further information on this very important disease. The incidence of breast cancer is rising all around the world and different races have different types of breast cancer in many cases. This disease is no longer primarily a disease afflicting women in the Western world.
Prevention of breast cancer is key of course. I remind all of my readers that research confirms that having an adequate blood level of Vitamin D (above 60 ng/ml) will reduce the risk of breast cancer 50% in the US. I test Vitamin D levels in many adults now and know what doses of Vitamin D3 to take to bring low levels up to normal. The usual RDA recommendation of 400 units/day is not adequate to provide any cancer protection in virtually all adults. (For men, this vitamin reduces the risk of prostate cancer by 50%.)

Alongside this media report I came across an organization hoping to educate women about prevention of breast cancer with the ambitious goal of preventing 1 million new cases of breast cancer in the next decade. The group is the American Breast Cancer Prevention Foundation and they have some interesting tips on their website for prevention. They also highlight a book by Dr. Edward Conley, MD called The Breast Cancer Prevention Plan.
