At 64 I face many aging issues developing slowly but surely in me. One that I have worked to overcome is the common memory decline that my older patients often talk about. Let me tell you about my path to a better memory. I noticed about 20 years ago that my brain function was slowing, I couldn't remember things as quickly and I often had to pause in my speech to "find a word that was just on the tip of my tongue". I started investigating how to turn this around. The first natural solution I found was gingko biloba. I started taking this and in a month I noticed an improvement in memory and brain function. I was skeptical in those days of natural things so I stopped the gingko for two weeks. My brain problems returned in that short time. I resumed the gingko and in less than a month the improvements were obvious gain. I have never stopped gingko again. Those of you who know me know that I can suffer from "motor-mouth" - I am rarely if ever at a loss for words and can talk non-stop about topics easily.
Then I started investigating other supplements to add further improvement. I soon heard Dr. Paris Kidd at a seminar talk about his new research into phosphatidylserine and its effects on memory. It is one of the few brain supplements that has every been subjected to a scientific double blind placebo trial and been proven to improve memory. I started it and noticed further improvements very quickly. I have continued on it since then. I have since found that this supplement often helps children with ADD improve their behavior and brain function.
I regard these two supplements as keys to preserving your brain function, speed of thinking and memory as we age. I will write about the others soon. I have taken a number of brain supplements for years and that helped me immensely when I had to write and pass the USMLE exams to start work in Kansas in 1997.
Do I have a perfect memory - ask my wife about when my memory still fails me......
In the meantime, here are two recent news articles about your brain health and maintaining it.
